Today's road warriors look for Wi-Fi hotspots to insure their notebooks and other mobile devices can gain Internet access, but Nokia and others are starting to place bets on the emerging WiMAX connectivity standard with new devices.
At this week's CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas, Nokia previewed the latest version of its Nseries, the N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition. Nokia said the first N810s would be available in the U.S. this summer, with initial distribution focused on regions where WiMAX, the wide-area wireless broadband service, is available."

Sprint to Develop Mobile Internet Portal With Google - New York Times: "NEW YORK (Reuters) - Google Inc. has made its biggest move yet on the U.S. mobile Web market by signing a deal with Sprint Nextel Corp. that positions the Internet company to build services to run on Sprint's planned WiMAX high-speed wireless network.
The two companies said on Thursday that Google will provide its Internet search service for a Web portal that Sprint is developing for the new WiMAX network. The gateway to various Web services will be ready in April 2008. The deal is Google's closest alliance with a major U.S. mobile service provider.
While Google is the world's leading provider of Web search and has agreements with large mobile providers in Asia and Europe, analysts say it has lagged Yahoo Inc. in the U.S. wireless market."

The shooter, a black male behind the wheel, was pinned at the intersection of 3rd and Townsend. Stuck in the right hand lane, the traffic heading up 3rd Street left him no immediate options to escape. A large semi truck was in the lane to his left further boxing him in and simultaneously providing me cover. Thus, I made my move and sprinted up toward the suspect's car. I rolled my body along the edge of the trailer until I was able to catch the full license plate number just before he found a window to spin out across the intersection toward the Embarcadero. Wireless Talk
The problem of compatibility between wireless devices is being addressed at an international conference this week. Scientists will be discussing what has been dubbed "Tower of Babel" technology - software that can converge different wireless gadgets into a single device. The aim for Software Defined Radio (SDR) is to be able to translate and understand any kind of radio wave signal, such as 3G or wi-fi.

If you were to go on a hill-walking trip, you might have a walkie-talkie to talk to friends who are not far away, a mobile in case of emergency, GPS, a Bluetooth connection and even a laptop or PDA with a wireless LAN connection. Every single one of these things is a radio, and they are all slightly different.
But in the future, with Software Defined Radio, all you need is one thing that can do the job of all of these devices. Convergence, that's what the scientists are talking about. The idea behind SDR is that an aerial in the device picks up radio signals passing through the air waves.
An analogue-to-digital converter transforms this signal into a digital format, which can be understood and manipulated by software onboard the device. Currently, most devices rely on hardware, rather than software, to get at the information in radio signals.
